Utah’s economic success can be accredited to strong leadership and an emphasis on core values that create an environment where small to medium businesses can start, grow and succeed. As the national voice for small business, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is one of our best kept secrets. Our only advertising is through our local lending partners and other local resource partners who work with us to deliver a comprehensive list of programs and services focused on helping small business owners to continue doing what they do best. Start a business and succeed.
As the national economy goes through various cycles, challenges and successes, SBA responds with increased emphasis in areas of immediate need. When our national trade deficit was increasing, SBA partnered with the Utah’s Department of Commerce to help more small businesses learn about exporting opportunities for their goods and services. When it became evident our troops returning home from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan needed more opportunities in the private sector, SBA partnered with the military branches and major colleges and universities to expand the Boots to Business program, preparing former soldiers to become entrepreneurs and small business owners.
On the lending front, SBA has developed and implemented a comprehensive credit scoring platform that helps streamline the loan application process for our participating lenders. This new credit scoring model uses over 10 years of SBA lending data to more accurately predict lending outcomes, making it easier for our lending partners to identify qualified loan applicants.
Furthermore, SBA is striving to make our programs and services more accessible to all Americans without regard to gender, race or culture. There is a place in our society for all who desire to participate in the world of entrepreneurship. With an effective business model, business plan and access to the right combination of resources, those with good ideas and the drive to succeed can potentially realize their dream of business ownership, regardless of their heritage.
Since the Great Recession of 2007-2009, Utah has seen a continuous positive recovery in our economy, and a continuing ranking at or near the top of many Best Places to Do Business Lists. SBA has contributed to this recovery by providing small business loan guarantees for 1252 loans totaling $480 million in fiscal 2014. This dollar amount is a record for Utah-based SBA lending, and indicates the growing strength of Utah’s economic foundation.
